[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Alphonse Elric
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Canon: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Timeline: Alphonse will arrive from the tail end of Episode 39, where he experiences his first shift or pull of his soul from his body. This is the first time he experiences the beginning processes of rejection and realizes that the connection between his soul and the armor is beginning to fade.
Background: Alphonse Elric @ the FMA wiki.
Personality:
Alphonse Elric is in many ways a foil to his brother Edward’s impulsive and rough personality. Where Edward is abrasive and arrogant, Alphonse is gentle and modest. Alphonse likes to think himself a gentlemen, noble, kind-hearted, compassionate and patient to a fault. Alphonse is an exceptionally bright young man, he has a good memory, a quick wit, and a decisive mind that can quickly assess details and apply solutions. Where Edward goes rushing in, Alphonse takes his time and thinks through a situation. Above all else, Alphonse, is self-sacrificing. He will not think twice about putting his own life in harm’s way if it meant saving an innocent life, a friend, a loved one, and in some cases even an enemy.
Prior to his mother’s death, Alphonse lead a happy life. His curious nature and drive for knowledge was sparked by the discovery of his Father’s alchemy research. Alongside Edward, they taught themselves the basics of alchemy and came to understand how to make simple toy-like things at first. Trisha, their mother, was even surprised to see that the boys understood and she only helped to fuel Alphonse’s growing appetite to learn. His high level of intelligence and eye for detail becomes even more apparent as the boys age and continue to teach themselves over the years.
It is the death of Trisha that brings the boys to a crossroad. One where Edward suggests that they bring her back using what they have learned. Lost, sad, and as desperate as Ed to feel the warm touch of his mother, Alphonse agrees. The decision ultimately costs him his body. At the age of 10, Alphonse Elric’s soul becomes attached to an aged piece of armor in the workshop of their estranged father. Denied physical growth, Alphonse is left to mature mentally in practically invincible suit of armor. Though, like his brother, he blames the failed transmutation of his mother and Edward’s loss of limbs on himself. However, this only pushes Alphonse to keep going and never give up. As Edward pledges to help get Alphonse his body back, so does Alphonse pledge to help return his Brother’s arm and leg.
The suit of armor eventually leaves many to confuse Alphonse as the “Full Metal Alchemist”, but the suit of armor grows to become one of Alphonse’s biggest insecurities. Alphonse dislikes being reminded of his large size and often becomes upset when it brings unwanted attention to him. He often cries out that it was not his choice to become so big. With no need to sleep, eat, or rest, Alphonse spends many nights alone and it leads him to eventually question if his really is Alphonse at all. He grows to crave the warmth of human touch and comes to fear that he might never know the touch of another human being again.
Eventually, he resolves to continue on trying to restore his body, because he can not take it anymore. He wants to get back to being normal, being human. He comes to realize that he can continue on because he owes it to Edward, and to turn on the body he was given would be turning on him and the alchemy he believes in. Alphonse puts it best, when he said: I believe in my brother, and I believe in alchemy. I will not lose faith... I want to believe! Beneath it all, he remains hopeful that he will be returned to his human body one day, and even keeps a journal of all the delicious food he plans on eating once he gets his body back.
As the series continues on and more people are hurt at the expense of their search to regain their bodies. Alphonse’s protective nature is pushed into high gear. Down in the 5th Laboratory he says the following in response to Riza Hawkeye telling him to leave and save himself: I won't leave you! I'm sick of watching people die! And I can't just sit back and take it anymore! I won't let anyone else get killed! Not when I can protect them! Though his protective nature can even be seen before then when he yells and calls Edward an idiot for not running away from Scar when he had the chance in Central City. Moreover, this nature can also be seen in the way he often rescues stray kittens, hiding them away in his empty body cavity so that his brother doesn’t see.
Some claim that Alphonse displays the psychological mindset of a child, due to being trapped in a suit of armor at the age of 10. But on the contrary, Alphonse displays the mindset of a young adult that grows to understand the complex demands of being an adult. He has to come to accept the death of his close friends and more importantly the fact that he himself may only have days, weeks, or months left to live before his soul rejects the metal body it has been given. naivete so many claim he has is merely from a result of his never ending sense of hope. Despite all the hardships, Alphonse never once falters or loses confidence that they will fail in their quest to return their bodies to normal. Even in the end, when he gives up his soul to restore Edward’s arm so that he can beat Father(the antagonist), he tells Truth, that Edward will most definitely come for him.
The law of Equivalent Exchange, which serves as the foundation for Alphonse’s system of beliefs is at the root of this. Following the basic rules, one can not gain anything without giving up something in return. The journey and life lessons that Alphonse has learned, has helped to make him a much stronger person and the man he will ultimately become in the future.
With all that said and done, it is ultimately Edward, his brother, who is the most important person to Alphonse. While, their mother is important, throughout Alphonse’s life it was Edward who came to care for him most. The entire series is nothing but a testament to the Brother’s close emotional and physical bond. Alphonse is forever touched by his brother’s sacrifice, awestruck by his inability to give up, and ultimately grateful for not dying and keeping his promise. They have been to hell and back, and without Edward, Alphonse would fall apart. When the two boys are often in danger, and Alphonse takes it upon himself to try and save Edward, they often are left arguing in the end over protecting one another.
It’s during these moments that those watching get to see another side of Alphonse. The one that can explode at a drop of a dime with emotions such as anger, rage, and fear. His selflessness kicks into high gear and his desire to keep Edward safe above all else clouds his judgment. It is something that tends to make an idiot out of Alphonse and his brother, but shows their unwavering love and determination to keep the other safe at all costs.
Why is your character a good fit for the setting of Soul Campaign, and what will they do once they are in the game?
Alphonse Elric would be chosen by BREW to arrive in Death City because of his intelligence, abilities, and skills. Not only is he the type of person who goes out of his way to protect those weaker, he is also the type of person who does good for goodness sake. While he has his own goals and dreams he is always willing to put the needs of the many before those of himself. He would gladly put his life on the line to protect Death City and the occupants of this near world.
More specifically, Alphonse brings to the table an impressive and intelligent mind gifted in the fields of chemistry, biology, and physics (while he may not be up to modern day standards what he knows is still very impressive). He is also a very skilled martial artist and his patience nature makes him a good candidate for teaching/share the his skills with others.
List the abilities your character will still have in Soul Campaign:
Alphonse Elric is capable of performing alchemy. His ability to pay close attention to detail ensures that any of his alchemical transmutations are completed quickly and efficiently. He does not go out of his way to create elaborate or gaudy things (that’s Edward’s job), but he has known to be creative from time to time if the situation calls for it. Due to his exposure to the gate and the Truth Alphonse is capable of preforming transmutations with alchemy without the use of drawing an array like his brother Edward. This ability however will not be available to Alphonse when he arrives in Death City.
It is however, worth noting, because even without alchemy, Alphonse is an extremely intelligent young man and possesses a great wealth of knowledge in the fields of biology and chemistry. It is very likely that had Alphonse taken the State Alchemist Qualification Exam in this canon he probably would have completed the exam as he did in the 2003 series from beginning to end. Something most candidates (including Edward) were unable to do.
Alphonse was also trained by Izumi Curtis in both alchemy and in hand to hand combat. “To train the spirit(mind), first train the body." Izumi’s starting lesson and the ones that followed help condition him to survive in the wilderness. Edward even remarks that Alphonse is an even more skilled combatant than himself and notes that he has never beaten him in a fight, this applies to even before Izumi's training. Alphonse was capable of appearing graceful as a giant suit of armor for years, keeping up in hand to hand combatants with vicious opponents like the homunculus and Scar.
These normal abilities will aid Alphonse in adapting to his new life and role in Death City as a Weapon.
List the weaknesses your character will gain (or lose) in Soul Campaign:
The biggest loss that Alphonse will face upon his arrival in Death City is obviously his use of alchemy. Coupled with his knowledge that his connection to his suit of armor is failing will be a devastating blow to him emotionally, because he will be unsure at first if there is a way to restore himself back to his original body in time.
This also means if his metal body gets damage in any way shape or form that repairing him will probably become a much more dangerous process if not impossible. Alphonse will have to be extremely careful when approaching battles than he normally would be to ensure, as such it will cause him to sit back and think more before engaging in a fight.

(Weapon Form) / Ability:
Due to the disconnection of Alphonse's soul and his body this leaves Alphonse in a a very particular and unique situation as far as his weapon form is concerned. Without his body Alphonse's soul is left in a very malleable state which will allow his wielder/partner through prolonged periods of time working together to control and choose what shape he takes.
His default/starter form will be in the form of a familiar reach weapon that is used throughout the series by his teacher and brother.
Given that it is quite rare for weapons to take on more than one shape Alphonse's partner will only be able to change him into (at the most) two other different weapon types.
Soul Description:
Modest, noble, patient, protective, brave and self-sacrificing.
It appears to be of normal size and silver in color. Upon close inspection one will notice that despite where Al's soul moves in his metal body it remains attached to the blood seal which keeps his soul affixed his metal body. Those using soul perception to get a closer look at his soul will note that there appears to be a very faint taint present. This is due to the fact that Edward's blood was used to bind him to the suit of armor when he lost his body all those years ago.
Lastly, the face of Al's soul is very similar to the one seen here and has a long white ribbon like tail protruding from the top of it's head. Alphonse's soul usually appears to be quite happy, but as he is usually swayed by moods it can appear sad or angry depending on his current mood.

First-Person
[When the feed comes on there's nothing but rain and water that fills the screen. It makes seeing what's actually going on impossible, that is until a group of four tiny feline feet come to stand over the device. Fingers come down next to lift the tiny creature up and into his large metal hands. An echoing laugh is heard on screen before gunmetal arms and legs kneel down and fill the screen. It's clear that the owner of the device had been about to make a call when they got distracted by the cat.]
What are you doing, little guy?
[He asks as his leather fingers wrap gently around the kitten's midsection and lifts it off the rain soaked ground. Cradling the small animal just beneath his breast plate to shield it from the rain, he bends once more to pick up his device. As the picture spins the kitten gives a soft but grateful sounding mew as Al begins to walk again. His metal feet are quick to carry him towards an alley where he uses some scaffolding above to block the rest of the rain from falling on the two of them.
If he could smile he would have down at the cat to reassure it that the rain shouldn't last all that longer.]
At least my big body is good for something, right?
[He comments to himself before he remembers that his device is still on. Quickly he lifts it up in his free hand and rambles off a different message to let his brother know that he'll probably be a while.]
Brother? I'll probably be late. I don't want to leave this little guy out here all by himself during this storm. I'll try and be home as soon as I can, ok?
Third-Person
White, black, and white again.
It's impossible to tell what's going on at first as the snow surrounds him and everything goes black. It reminds him of that night when he watched his body get pulled into a million pieces and for an instance just before there was nothing there was light. This time there is no pain, but that's because in a body of steel there was no pain to be felt.
What senses he does have seem to come alive all at once as the darkness is over come by light again. No matter what direction he looks there is nothing and just when he's about to give up he spots something on the edge of his senses. Turning his giant seven foot tall frame he lets out a gasp that vibrates through empty steel as he freezes in place. There just a few feet ahead of is a very tiny and malnourished body with long golden hair, but before he can focus on those protruding hip and rib bones or the giant doorway just beyond his vision is fading from white to black again.
"Ah!" He shouts out in surprise as he comes to body snapping up from it's position on the ground and his confusion would show on his face if it were capable of showing his surprise. It's clear that he's a room or building of some sort, where exactly he is uncertain but it is most definitely not the snow covered pass that lead from Baschool to Fort Briggs. Cautiously he stands on his own two metal feet and does a quick inventory check, and the pouch on his leg still contains a hand full of white chalk, a few pencils, and his journals. At least whoever brought him here was nice enough to leave his personal effects, however it does little to calm his nerves and it's hard to shake what he had just seen from the forefront of his thoughts.
"I should be in the pass... in the snow... the Gate." He's struggling to cling to the memory and the moment. Drawing his hands forward and up, he looks down upon his open palms as he begins to shake.
"I saw the Gate. My body. How did - ?!" He cuts off his own thoughts as the sound of metal shifting grows louder. Clearly he can remember the words of another in the same situation as him, it is inherently impossible to stick another person's body with a different soul. "A body which shouldn't have a soul in it. It's being rejected!"
He falls, letting his knees give out despite having the ability to stand for all time, an all too human thing to do and something done out of habit. Curling his large fingers into fists he draws in 'breathes' of disbelief and heaves a sob, "My body is pulling on my soul!"
Though he can not feel blood rushing, or a heart speeding up in panic, it's there in the way he moves. Shifting from side to side as he pushes back up to grasp a hold of his head with his hands.
"Snap out of it, snap out of it!" He tells it to himself because it's all he can do. He's no longer in the snow and he's no longer in the North. Who knew where his brother was or if things had even gone according to plan, but one thing was for sure. He had to find someone, anyone, and do his best to figure out what was going on and where exactly he was. Time was running out. He had to get back, he had to find his friends, and he especially needed to find his brother. First thing first, he had to find a way out of here, but before he can clap his hands together and make his way out one of the few television screens around him goes on and the image of Spirit Albarn appears to greet him. It prompts a loud cry in surprise to be fill the kishin chamber, because where he came from pictures didn't move and talk!
Calm down! You have been brought to Shibusen Technical Institute in Death City, Nevada. You're okay.
"Death City?" Alphonse does his best to remain calm, but he's already bursting with questions and it's hard to be polite when he was just in the middle of doing something. Of course, as the pair go on to exchange information and Alphonse is told about the war and witches all he can do is give a slow nod as Spirit asks if he has anymore questions. Sure he did, but it was already clear that he was stuck here and there was no way to go home just yet. So he steels what thoughts he does have and prepares to face the world outside of this dark room.
Notes: Another interesting thing to note is that once Alphonse learns the in and out of being a weapon and what his duties entail. He will actually dislike the idea and be quite against devouring souls. It'll probably take a fair amount of time and some convincing to get him to eat them, because of his past experiences and knowledge of Philosopher's Stones and the promise he made about not using the lives of another being to aid himself or his goals.
